College: The University of Washington is located in Seattle, Washington. The public school is one of the oldest universities on the West Coast, founded in 1861. 43,000 students attend the school. The UW has one of the best medical schools in the country. The Husky sports teams are well-known, especially rowing, basketball, softball, and football.
Book: “Our Only May Amelia” by Jennifer Holm (Call number: F-HOL). Set along the Naselle River in southwestern Washington state, May Amelia Jackson is the only girl ever born in the new settlement. In 1899, life is different, with seven older brothers and a love of adventure, May Amelia Jackson just can't seem to abide her family's insistence that she behave like a proper young lady. This book was a Newbery Honor Book in 2000.
