College of the Week - University of San Diego

College: University of San Diego is a private, Catholic university located in San Diego, California. It offers 40 degrees and was started in 1949.   Just over 8000 students attend this school.  The campus, 2 miles north of downtown, has great views of Mission Bay.  The school mascot is Toreros which is Spanish for bullfighters.

 

Book: “The Giant Rat of Sumatra” by Sid Fleischman (Call number: F-FLE).  This book was a "Best Book" in 2008.   The book is about a cabin boy on a pirate ship that finds himself in San Diego in 1846 as war breaks out between the U.S. and Mexico.
