Preschool: The Little Eaglets had Mrs. Tria Goodsky, Sherwood 1st grade teacher, as their reader. She read "". Parents were also given a brochure titles, "Why Read Aloud to Children" by author Jim Trelease. Next week's reader will be Office Manager, Mrs. Goettel!
Kindergarten-Grade 3: It was voting week! Students in K-3 (except Mrs. Gordon's class) watched the Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award video and then voted for their favorite. Mrs. Gordon's class will vote on Monday 3/31. Once that class has voted, we'll announce our Sherwood totals and submit them to the statewide contest. Students enjoyed remembering their favorite books from this year's poster.
Grade 4-5: We are getting ready for National Poetry Month in April. This week we browsed poetry books and used an online form to record our favorite lines from a poem and the personal connection(s) we can make. These are called "text to self" connections. (Mr. Gibson & Mrs. Mindt's class will do this next week due to the Talent Show assembly).
Grade 6: We started looking at a bus schedule. We compared them to the ferry schedules we worked on recently. Students worked in pairs (or by themselves) to use non-traditional reading skills to find information on the schedule. We will finish up next week.
Special Exhibit: Mrs. LeCompte's kindergarten class put their fairy tale books on display in the library. They were well received. Many 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students wrote positive notes to these young authors!Professional: Mr. Sonnen attended the annual meeting of the Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award Committee. He has served on the committee for over 10 years. At the meeting, held at Hazelwood Elementary in Newcastle, WA, the committee picked the books to be nominees for the 2015 award.
