This Week in the Library: March 31 - April 4

Spring Break is almost here!  Make sure to read every day during the break!  Here's a rundown of what happened in the Sherwood Elementary Library this week:

Preschool: Our preschool reader was Office Manager, Mrs. Goettel.  She read "Are You a Horse?" by Andy Rash.  Preschool checkout & storytime will resume after Spring Break.  Our next reader on April 17 will be kindergarten teacher, Mrs. LeCompte.

Grade 1: Mrs. Gordon's Class voted for Washington Children's Choice.  They were our last class to vote.  The other classes heard "Click, Clack, Quackity, Quack" by Denise Cronin and Betsy Lewin.  We began a discussion about alphabetical order (ABC order) and how it is used in the library.  We will work more on alphabetical order after the break!  Alphabet Order game

Grade 2:  We create an informational poster on chart paper describing the Fiction section of the library.  We talked about how the books are organized and some of the great series that second graders might enjoy reading - Magic Tree House, Junie B. Jones, Cam Jansen, A to Z Mysteries, Scooby Doo, and others!  Students were encourage to use the 5-finger check to see if a book is right for them.  The poster will be hung above the fiction section!

Wolfs_Coming_coverKindergarten & Grade 3: For National Poetry Month, we heard "Wolf's Coming" by Joe Kulka.  It is written in rhyme and has a great surprise ending!

Grades 4 & 5:  We continued working with poetry.  Browsing different poetry books, selecting poems, and making connections.

Grade 6:  We finished work with reading a bus schedule.  Students looked at different aspects of reading this type of material.

Professional: Mr. Sonnen attended "What's New in Children's Literature 2014."  The workshop taught by Dr. Peggy Sharp was amazing.  He heard about hundreds of great books for kids and how to use them in the curriculum.  Mr. Sonnen also attended the monthly meeting of the Puget Sound Council for the Review of Children's Materials in Shoreline.  He orally reviewed two books to the group.
