College of the Week - UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso)

College: Univeristy of Texas at El Paso.  This university is near the Rio Grande River in El Paso, Texas. You can see Mexico from the campus.  Over 22,000 students attend this school.  They offer 70 different bachelor degrees.  UTEP has a great School of Engineering.  It was ranked #12 in the nation by Washington Monthly Magazine in 2012  for excellence in social mobility, research and service.  It's mascot is the miners because the school was originally named The Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy when it was founded in 1914.

Book:  Pablo's Tree by Pat Mora (E-MOR).  Each year on his birthday, a young Mexican American boy looks forward to seeing how his grandfather has decorated the tree he planted on the day the boy was adopted (from catalog).  Author, Pat Mora, was born in El Paso, Texas.
